On-Demand Webinar: Critical Safety Devices

Determination, Function, and Common Misconceptions

11:00 AM (EDT) Thursday, August 28, 2025

Critical Safety Devices (CSDs) are often the final layer of engineered protection within a unit operation – designed to prevent escalation of events such as fires, explosions, or toxic releases. Unlike Basic Process Control System (BPCS) interlocks, CSDs are not intended for routine operational control and are not reliant on administrative procedures or human intervention.

This technical session outlines how Sigma-HSE can help identify Critical Safety Devices (CSDs) using PHA studies. We will also cover, their intended role within a facility’s overall Process Safety System and  what distinguishes them from other types of instrumentation or interlocks.

The session also addresses misconceptions that can lead to misclassification or ineffective implementation—especially when CSDs are confused with standard safety controls or when bypass procedures are improperly managed.

What You’ll Learn in the Critical Safety Devices (CSDs)n Webinar

  • Definition and Function: Understand what constitutes a Critical Safety Device and how its purpose fits within a broader risk reduction strategy.

  • Examples from Industry: Examine real-world examples of devices classified as CSDs—such as high-integrity shutdown valves, flame arrestors, or pressure relief systems—and why they qualify.

  • Misconceptions and Misuse: Explore common misinterpretations, such as assuming all safety interlocks are CSDs or misapplying procedural controls in place of hardware safeguards.

  • Requirements for Disabling a CSD: Review what must be documented, evaluated, and approved when a CSD is bypassed or taken out of service, including risk assessments and temporary mitigation measures.

Who Should Attend the Webinar?

This session is suitable for professionals involved in the specification, operation, or verification of safety systems in facilities that manage hazardous materials. Attendees may include:

  • Instrumentation and Control Engineers
  • Process Safety and Risk Engineers
  • PSM Coordinators and Compliance Leads
  • Operations and Maintenance Supervisors
  • Capital Project and Design Engineers
  • EH&S and Audit Personnel

Whether you are updating your SIS architecture or reviewing existing safety functions, this webinar offers a structured framework for understanding and applying Critical Safety Devices (CSDs) accurately across your facility.
